Kathmandu / KathmanduTrip Overview
The Khopra Ridge Khayer Lake Trek is one of the least visited trekking destinations of Nepal, located in the famous Annapurna region. Popular trekking routes like the Annapurna Circuit Trek, Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and others steal the spotlight, letting routes like Khopra Ridge go unnoticed to some extent. This journey takes you through the seldom visited and remote parts of Nepal’s Annapurna region. You experience rough trails, stunning views, and cultural encounters. Our team at Adventure Tansen designed this package for adventurers who seek less crowded paths.
The trek spans 11 days, starting and ending in Kathmandu. You begin with a drive to Pokhara, then head into the hills. The route then climbs from lowland villages to high ridges. You pass rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and alpine meadows. Khopra Ridge offers panoramic sights of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and many other peaks of the region. The highlight comes at Khayer Lake, a sacred site at 4827 meters above sea level. Locals believe the lake holds spiritual power and you might see some devotees bathing in its chilly shores. You hike there for a day trip, then descend through varied landscapes. We handle all the logistics so you focus on what matters the most at any given moment.
Our package includes airport transfers, bus rides between cities, and private vehicles for trek access points. You stay in teahouses and lodges along the way, and our guides and porters support you throughout your visit. They carry up to 12 kg per person, carrying baggages of two trekkers at once. Our English-speaking guides share knowledge about the area, fun facts, and traditional wisdom of the locals. This trek suits those with moderate fitness as daily walks last 5 to 7 hours. Elevations range from 850 meters in Pokhara to over 4800 meters at the lake. We provide essentials like sleeping bags and down jackets if needed, which you have to return after the trip.
Nepal’s mountains draw over hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly, per government data. The Annapurna area is the most visited trekking region of the country, but the route we take will not be crowded at all. Our route avoids the busier, standard Annapurna Base Camp path. You encounter fewer people, more wildlife, and authentic villages.

Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu & transfer to hotel
You land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our team locates you at the terminal, and exchanges simple greetings. We arrange a private vehicle, usually a spacious car, for the transfer to your hotel in Thamel. The drive covers about 6 kilometers and takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Once at the hotel, we will have you check in and you can unwind a bit. Since this is the first day of the Khopra Ridge Khayer Lake Trek, we provide a welcome briefing on the trek ahead. You receive your room key and breakfast voucher.
We recommend trekkers use the afternoon to adjust to the time zone. Stroll through Thamel’s bustling streets, where shops offer trekking gear if you need last-minute items. Sample local tea or locally sourced coffee at a nearby cafe. We recommend light meals to ease into Nepali cuisine. Kathmandu pulses with energy, a city where ancient temples dominate the landscape. The valley holds over a million residents, according to the census data.

Vegetation thins as we are now above the treeline.

We settle in, enjoy our dinner, and call it a night after a short walk around the settlement. The guide will point out peaks and spill some facts about Khayer Lake. Battery charging fees apply at such high altitude tea houses, along with hot shower fees. Khopra sees fewer visitors, around 5000 yearly from permit data.

Meanwhile, September to November delivers crisp air and post-monsoon clarity. Daytime highs hit 15 degrees, nights drop to zero at high points.
Avoid June to August monsoons for slippery trails and leeches. December to February risks snow at ridges. We schedule trips in the viable and popular windows to make sure that the weather conditions do not let us down. Pack layers for temperature swings. Autumn and spring seasons minimize risks and maximize enjoyment.
Can a beginner join this trip?
Beginners can join the Khopra Ridge Khayer Lake Trek with proper preparation. Some trek enthusiasts rate it easy to moderate for novices. We mandate trekkers to have moderate fitness and training. Some of the steep sections can be a bit challenging for first-timers. Those steep parts surely demand endurance.
The Khopra Ridge Khayer Lake Trek is fit for starters with stamina and also moderate for all levels. Train 4 to 6 weeks with hikes. Build cardio through jogging, and strengthen legs via squats. We provide guides for support and you need to pace yourself daily.
Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness strikes above 3500 meters. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. There are many prevention strategies, and the risk is very low at 3650 meters max sleeping elevation. Gradual ascent, keeping yourself well hydrated, and avoiding alcohol promotes acclimatization. Ascend no more than 500 meters daily without dedicated rest stops for acclimatization. Drink 3 liters of water, eat carbs for energy and use Diamox if prescribed. Our guides check oxygen levels and have you descend if symptoms worsen.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
You stay in basic lodges with twin beds and shared facilities. Blankets cover beds, but we supply sleeping bags for warmth. Rooms lack heating, so dress in layers at night or simply get a sleeping bag. Expect clean setups in remote areas, where hot showers run on solar power and cost $2-3 extra. Extra drinks like coffee cost $1-2 which is not in the Khopra Ridge Khayer Lake Trek package. We include standard meals only. You pay for snacks and alcohol as well. Solo adds about USD 200 to the standard cost. Flights between cities are extra at $150-200 round-trip. We include most essentials and we recommend you track expenses daily. Cash works best in remote areas.
