Trip Information
Best Time to Visit
You can do the Tibet Cultural Tour at any time of year, and each season gives a special charm and set of experiences.
From April to June, springtime is ideal as you get pleasant weather, wildflowers in bloom, clear skies, and great views of the mountains. Likewise, autumn (September to October) is a great time to visit, since it’s stable, not very hot, and offers clear views of the mountains. These changes in weather are wonderful for taking pictures and going on sightseeing tours.
Many people also prefer to visit in summer (from July to August), despite the possibility of hot temperatures and rain. Everything turns greener, and various festivals present enjoyable cultural activities.
Traditionally, people do not like to travel in winter months because it is cold, yet it is enjoyable and peaceful because fewer tourists are around. Lhasa and many other towns are easy to travel to, and traveling pilgrims help make the culture more vibrant. Tibet is beautiful and spiritually filled throughout the year.
Elevation and Distance
Beginning from Kathmandu at an altitude of 1,400 meters, the Tibet Cultural Tour goes on to the Tibetan Plateau. While on the trip, we stop at Nyalam (3,700m), Lhatse (4,050m), Shigatse (3,900 m), and Gyantse (3,950m) and finally reach Lhasa at 3,650 meters.
Lalung La Pass, which sits at 5,050 meters above sea level, is the highest point you will see on this trip, and the lowest point where you start will be in Kathmandu.
Since the driving distance is approximately 1,100 kilometers at relatively low altitude, it allows you to get used to the thinner air slowly. Along their journey, you can see amazing beauty, a wide range of natural scenery, and experience unique cultures in Asia’s most beautiful region.
Difficulty and Altitude Sickness
Since there is not much hiking involved in this tour, it makes it open to everyone, whether you are a beginner or an expert traveler. You do not have to hike heavily, but the high elevations, especially between places like Lalung La at 5,050 meters, can still make you experience altitude sickness.
Occasionally, having a headache, feeling dizzy, or being tired results from the change in air pressure. We climb up gradually and build in some rest days for getting used to the altitude.
To avoid altitude sickness, you should keep yourself hydrated, avoid alcohol, and walk at a relaxed pace.
Accommodation
During the Tibet cultural tour, you will always stay in shared rooms and enjoy a breakfast that is included in the package. The hotels we use are properly selected and give us rooms that are pleasant, clean, and come with simple amenities.
All of the rooms have bathrooms attached with hot and cold water, Western toilets, and places to charge your items.
In addition, most accommodations provide great views of the area, enhancing how enjoyable your trip is. All the hotels, even though they differ a bit, are chosen because of how clean and comfortable they are for travelers.
Food and Drink
When you go on the Tibet Cultural Tour, your package includes breakfast only. Normally, a Tibetan breakfast is made with Tibetan bread, toast, eggs, butter or regular tea, coffee, and some seasonal fruits.
In bigger towns such as Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse, you can try many different Tibetan, Chinese, Nepali, and a few Western meals. A lot of locations in cities offer vegan dishes.
It is best to pick a clean and suggested restaurant while you are dining. Before drinking, make sure you drink bottled or boiled water, and do not eat raw food in remote regions to avoid health problems.
Alternative Routes
If you dream of seeing Mount Everest from a different angle, you might consider signing up for the Tibet-side Everest Base Camp trip. If you choose to stay at Rongbuk outside Tingri, you will be surprised by the beautiful mountain sunrise and solitude.
You can also consider booking a flight to Tibet and then driving to Nepal via all the cities you’re touring. It is possible to fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa to see amazing views from above, then continue on the road to Gyantse, Shigatse, and the Friendship Highway, or the journey can go in the opposite direction for a different perspective and minimum problems with transitions.
A tour of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar will help you explore more of the landscape during your spiritual journey. This spiritual trip features walking around the Kailash Mountain and getting to know western Tibetan culture.
Depending on what you’re looking for, you will find either grand views, rich culture, or a deep spiritual fulfillment from these alternatives.
Can a Beginner Join This Tour?
The Tibet Cultural Tour is a good choice for both families and older adults who are just starting their journeys. The overland trip is mainly about culture, so it is comfortable for travelers of all ages and fitness levels.
To help people acclimatize without problems, the itinerary slowly increases the altitude. Most travelers get used to mountain life because they stay hydrated and take things slowly.
Enjoying a trip around Tibet is simple for beginners when they can count on professional guides, nice places to stay, and transportation the whole way.
Preparation and Fitness
Although the Tibet Cultural Tour does not demand much strength, some fitness is used to support your journey in Tibet’s high-altitude areas. Helping your body become stronger with a few weeks of walking or simple exercises close to the trip may boost your energy. Mental training is just as necessary since being in remote regions with a high elevation can be hard for some people.
A good trip is full of positivity, easy changes to the schedule, and enjoying a calm journey, which enhances the overall experience.
Take note of your body’s signs, relax if you feel tired, and listen to what your guide tells you to have the best time possible.
Gadget Charging, Internet, and Communication
Wi-Fi is usually free in the hotels of major cities like Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse, and other towns, and the login information is given to you at check-in. The guide is there to help you with anything related to it.
If you’re far from the city, Wi-Fi could be too slow or gone, which is why you should download any important data in advance.
At a travel agency or at the airport in China, you can purchase a SIM card from some of China’s largest carriers (China Mobile, Unicom, or Telecom) that includes data, calls, and texting on China’s network.
It is usually costly and unreliable to use a foreign SIM card. Some travelers rent pocket Wi-Fi gadgets at the airport, since these devices give you reliable internet services without a local SIM.
Charging can be done at hotels, but for peace of mind, bring a multi-purpose charger and also a power bank, just in case.
Always install a legal VPN before you get there, since the Great Firewall prohibits access to sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Permit
All foreigners traveling to Tibet need a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, which is obtained through a registered tour operator—permission from the Tibetan government is needed, but there is no way for outsiders to individually apply for one.
Should your travel plans include Gyantse, Shigatse, Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash, or Samye Monastery, as well as Lhasa, you will be required to get an Alien’s Travel Permit, which is usually arranged as you get to Lhasa.
You have to get military/foreign affairs permit if you plan to visit restricted or border areas, and it can take 10–15 days to be ready. We will handle the permits and check the documents are ready for your trip.
Transportation
During the cultural tour, private and comfortable vehicles are used for all land transfers, based on the number of people.
If you visit Tibet as a solo traveler, part of a couple, or with a small group, transportation will be arranged so you can travel across the area pleasantly and comfortably.
Besides SUVs and minivans, you will find clean and reliable tourist buses offered by the company for ventures up to high-altitude areas.
Since our drivers have much experience here, you are always secure and relaxed during your ride. Travel onboard these buses is always comfortable since the buses stick to the prepared schedule.
Insurance
All the travelers are advised to buy travel insurance before going on the Tibet Cultural Tour. Since the journey involves traveling through high-altitude regions, it is essential to choose an insurance plan that specifically covers high-altitude travel and covers medical help at such altitudes and air ambulances.
While the trip is easy in terms of activity, the fact that the area is far from facilities and medical care makes having coverage a good plan. The insurance you have should also protect against trip cancellations, delays, and thefts or losses of your things.
Always take the policy and emergency numbers with you when you travel. Feel secure because you are covered and protected during your trip.
What to Expect
On the Tibet Cultural Tour, tourists enjoy seeing the cultural history, visiting spiritual places, and enjoying beautiful scenery. Visiting monasteries from the past, multi-colored markets, and cities such as Lhasa, Gyantse, and Shigatse is part of what travelers can anticipate.
The trip’s pace is easygoing, and you get to notice the natural highlights along the way, such as snow-covered mountains, large mountain passes, plains, and blue lakes.
By interacting with people from Tibet, you can gain a clear idea of their customs and daily ways of living. This trip requires very little physical effort while offering people a beautiful and enlightening visit across the Tibetan Plateau.
